Happy Birthday, dear prof. Gilinskiy!!!!!

June 16, 2024 marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Doctor of Law, Professor Yakov Gilinskiy.

Yakov Gilinskiy was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) into the family of a famous doctor; the scientist’s life path is inseparable from the history of his native city. Participant in the heroic “blockade” of the city on the Neva. At different periods, Yakov Ilyich’s scientific and pedagogical activities were associated with the Sociological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the European University, «Hertsenovka», the University of the General Prosecutor’s Office, etc.

Prof. Gilinskiy – the founder of Soviet (Russian) deviantology. Works of Ya.Gilinskiy (the first publications date back to 1971) had a huge influence on the formation and development of deviantology throughout the post-Soviet space and in the former countries of the socialist “camp”. Founder of the Baltic Criminological Seminar.

Author of 705 scientific publications, including 150 published in English, Hungarian, Italian, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, French, Japanese. The scientist’s works are devoted to theoretical and applied aspects of the study of crime, suicidal behavior, drunkenness, drug addiction, as well as deviant positive behavior, etc.

Member of the UK Academy of Education, European Society of Criminology (ESC), International Sociological Association (ISA), International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation, Lithuanian Criminological Society associations.

The scientist’s humanistic views, his enormous knowledge, gift of scientific foresight, benevolence and exceptional scientific integrity, commitment to broad international scientific cooperation of criminologists and deviantologists are generally recognized and respected in the scientific world!
